Our New York City Story
SPARK started in the small Upper West Side studio apartment of Sebastian Alappat. After a friend mentioned he should teach art to kids, he took it to heart and started with one student at his dining room table. Through a connection to a local school, Sebastian began running summer camps in his NYC backyard with the support of his wife Amanda.
In the early first years, Sebastian focused on teaching just art but being an avid yogi, he realized there was more that he could offer to make this small business stand out. He completed a WeeYogis certification for kids yoga as well as Mission Be certification to become a mindfulness educator. These two new elements of yoga and meditation in addition to art changed everything.
In order to reach more kids, Sebastian needed to hire his first Teaching Artist to continue to grow the program. As a fellow creative, he saw the tremendous value in teachers who were also artists on the path to honing their unique crafts and talents and loved working with kids. Now Spark employs 10 Teaching Artists and is always looking to work with who share the same vision of helping kids
Because of Spark’s success, he outgrew its humble apartment beginnings and decided to open up his own studio on the Upper West Side. Over the years, Spark has had multiple spaces but now employs a gorgeous sun lit studio on West 72nd that has become our base of operations.
Sebastian has been able to leverage the best of what the city has to offer to bolster and enhance Spark. There are regularly scheduled trips to the BEST museums in the world, from The Met, MOMA, Guggenheim, or the Museum of Natural History. With sketch books in hand, they draw, observe and develop an appreciation for some of the best artwork ever made. Spark also loves to use Central Park and Riverside Park as a way to forge a connection between kids and nature.
In the last decade since Spark’s inception, Sebastian and his talented team have taught and served thousands of kids. Currently, in over 20 schools as an enrichment provider, Spark continues to spread to Brooklyn, Long Island and now his new home state, Pennsylvania. Spark has multiple offerings from classes to birthday parties, holiday and summer camps, portfolio prep programs for kids looking to get into prestigious art high schools as well as pods, privates and virtual classes. In the spring of 2025, he will be launching a forest school based in New York to further cultivate the vision of using nature as yet another powerful tool for children’s wellbeing. In 2024, he also created Spark Arts Inc, a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to bring the arts to underserved communities.

Posted on Jenny Cheng My 5 year old daughter loved Spark art camp! The day activity and the curriculum are so well designed, and the teaching artists each week are all so caring and fun. My daughter had so so much fun everyday! She’s been bringing home more art ideas with various medium explorations, and she loves showing me all these yoga poses she’s learned. Thank you Sebastian again for hosting such an amazing art camp!Posted on Vanessa Villanueva Ilagan Desperate to find an Art Portfolio class after a thorough search in the web, we came across SPARK. We were late in enrolling our daughter however, the staff and owner were very courteous and are extremely helpful in navigating this experience. This greatly helped my daughter put in the work! We highly recommend SPARK! If it were not for SPARK, my daughter would not have been accepted to her HS of choice.Posted on Jovana Skoro Sebastian and his team, particularly Joel, did an amazing job helping guide my daughter with her work on her portfolio pieces. She learned many new techniques and explored various mediums. They challenged her to step outside of her comfort zone and provided extra attention and time, when she needed it the most. The studio space is warm and welcoming. I would definitely recommend this program (she got an acceptance from her top choice school!)Posted on Andrew Weinman I have three children ranging in age from 7 to 16 and all three have taken virtual classes with SPARK. My 16-year old has been taking private animation lessons with Joel for several months now and she absolutely loves it. She looks forward to the lessons every week. Joel is incredibly thoughtful and well prepared and provides us with a recap of each lesson. He is also helping our daughter with her portfolio through SPARK's portfolio review program and it has been so helpful. The SPARK team is always well prepared and the lessons are great. Plus, the team members are all artists so they understand the way my children think about art. Thank you so much!Posted on Milky Gomez We recently celebrated our daughter's 9th birthday at Spark and had a wonderful time! Jonathan was very artistic, attentive and kept the children entertained and engaged at all times. We added face painting to our party and Maddy, the face painter, was exceptionally creative and very sweet/kid-friendly. My daughters had so much fun that now they are interested in taking art lessons at Spark! Thank you Sebastian, Jonathan and Maddy for making it a memorable experience!Posted on Zuri Placencia Both my daughters attended Spark summer camp. They had such a fantastic time! Every day, they would wake up and be so excited to go to camp! They also never wanted to leave camp when we would go pick them up. They’ve learned so much in such a short time. Spark offered everything I’ve wanted them to be a part of in one place. The yoga, meditation, learning different art techniques and their background. Thank you for all that you do! Looking forward to continuing to be a part of Spark family!Posted on Diana Levy Moldovan Amazing summer camp and after-school program!Posted on Anna Raczka My 15 year old daughter attended the camp this summer. She was hesitant before going but when she got home she couldn't stop talking how much fun it was. She loves art, mostly drawing and felt it was very relaxed and fun but at the same structured enough for her to feel like she knew which direction to go on her projects. She was excited about doing some drawings while visiting interesting places in the neighborhood and going to Met. Teachers were very responsive and super friendly and fun.on the last day of the camp she brought home a beautiful painting that is now hanging on the wall.Posted on Ramoncito Robles Sebastian and the entire team have been entirely accommodating given the special needs of my daughter. They created a special curriculum for her and slowly introduced art to her in a meaningful way. My daughter is now more comfortable in art activities at school after working with Spark. I hope that others can see the value of their after-school and tailor made “pods”, especially families with kids with special needs looking for providers that are participating in OPWDD.
